I was doing some online training the other week with Abby Grace Photography (a branding photographer in the States) and she spoke about the 5 P’s of photos that every brand needs. I loved this concept and it really rang true for me, so I wanted to share these with you today.
In today’s digital age, where capturing and retaining your audience’s attention can feel as elusive as grasping a fleeting dream, the importance of visual content cannot be overstated. It has become one of the most essential components of modern marketing, across social media feeds, websites, and digital advertisements.
In a world where people have super short attention spans, a single image holds the power of a thousand words, so mastering the art of visual content can mean the difference between blending into the digital landscape or standing out from your competitors.
In this blog post, we’ll look at the 5 P’s of Visual Content that every business owner in Auckland (or the world) needs: Product, Process, Patrons, Personality, and Promotion.
When it comes to showcasing your goods and services, visually appealing product photos can make a world of difference. With everybody shopping online these days having clear crisp images is now more important than ever. For service-based business owners who don’t have physical products (think online courses and PDFS instead) it’s still important to think of a way to show these products to your clients. Perhaps it’s by using a mockup created in Canva like the image below of your PDFs or courses, or by physically printing them out and bringing them along to your photoshoot. I always encourage my clients on our social shoots to bring along some branded materials to have in front of them for their client interaction shots, as it’s a great way to add some more of your brand colours into the photos as well as having something for you to both to look at.
Sometimes we need to think outside the box and look at analog ways of showcasing something digital in a tangible manner. Let’s use a business coach as an example who is explaining the process of a marketing funnel (something they generally teach online in a Zoom class using a diagram). There are multiple ways we can show this, perhaps it’s a case of printing the PDF as mentioned above, a shot of them sitting in front of the computer with this diagram on the screen, or let’s grab a whiteboard or chalkboard and physically map it out. This way they are going to get a variety of images to showcase the one product – after all the last thing you want is a whole bunch of photos of you sitting in front of a computer looking like everyone else.
For the process, you want to think about how you can visually show how you get to the final product. What does a typical workflow or workday look like to you? Where does your expertise shine through?
Giving your clients a glimpse into the process of how you create and deliver your products or services, really helps to build trust and credibility.
Knowing who your ideal client is huge in business, and it’s equally important in your brand photos. After all, if you work only with women who don’t want to be showing a bunch of men on your website, or likewise if you work with kids, then you clearly need to have photos that show you connecting with kids to help build trust with the mums who are ultimately making the booking.
So before taking your branding photos stop and think about who it is that you’re serving, and who you want to attract. Can you show the people you serve using the products or services you deliver?
This is something we always take into consideration when booking you onto one of our social shoots, as it’s important that the people you are sharing the day with and who will be standing in as your “clients” for those client interaction photos, are actually the right fit for you and your business.
When it comes to visual content, one key ingredient that can make your brand stand out in a sea of sameness is personality. Your brand personality is like the secret sauce that adds flavour, charm, and that special spark to your visuals. It’s what makes you, well, you!
So, don’t be afraid to let your brand’s personality shine through in your visual content. Infuse it with your unique voice, style, and values. Are you a playful and quirky brand? Let your visuals reflect that with bold colours, and energetic photos. Or maybe you’re an elegant and sophisticated brand? Opt for sleek designs, refined typography, and a minimalist colour palette. By aligning your visual content with your brand’s personality, you create a cohesive and memorable experience for your audience.
Personality is where you can really stand out from the competition with a library of unique images, after all, there is no one else in the world the same as you!
These are images that you can use to convey a call to action or direct your viewer’s eye to a certain thing. These images might make your viewer stop and pay attention to something, laugh out loud, or look left or right. They include things like you pointing to something maybe above or below, a flat lay that has space for text, or a blank screen that you can add a screenshot to later. They invite the viewer to do something.
And there you have it, The 5 P’s of Visual Content that every business needs for their marketing. From showcasing your products in all their visual glory to revealing the captivating process behind your work, attracting the right audience, infusing your brand personality, and crafting compelling promotions, each P plays a vital role in your visual content strategy.
So before booking a personal branding photoshoot take a moment to think about each P and what sort of images you might need for your business. Capturing a range of images across each section will give you a library of unique images that you’ll be able to keep using to illustrate things in a visual way. Remember people only read about 28% of the text so having visuals to grab their attention is vital.
